Major Amazon Parking Facility
Date: September 2026
Project: Large-scale asphalt surfacing
The delivery of this brand-new parking facility for Amazon required careful coordination, effective project management and the expertise of specialist contractors working together to meet a demanding programme.
Our client, as the main contractor, led the overall project delivery, coordinating the various elements of the development to ensure the facility was completed to the required specification and within the agreed timeframe. Derek Lewis Ltd was appointed as the surfacing subcontractor, responsible for delivering the extensive asphalt works across the site.
12,500 tonnes of asphalt laid in 12 weeks
Working closely within the main contractor's programme, Derek Lewis Ltd laid approximately
12,500 tonnes of asphalt to form the new parking facility and its associated Section 278 (S278) access roads.
With significant areas to surface and ambitious production targets to achieve, the works demanded efficient planning, reliable material supply and close coordination with wider site operations. Through this collaborative approach, the surfacing works were completed within the 12-week timeframe set by our client.
Specialist materials and precision level control
Holcim's SuperDrainAsphalt was used across all three asphalt layers within the parking bays, providing a specialist surfacing solution designed to support drainage requirements.
Accuracy across the extensive parking area was achieved using a dual-grade laser system working in conjunction with receivers fitted to the paving equipment. This technology provided precise level references across two axes, helping control material depth during laying and achieve the specified levels and falls.
The use of specialist asphalt materials and laser-guided paving formed an important part of delivering the surfacing element to the required standard.
High production across every layer
The scale of the development called for substantial daily output. Derek Lewis Ltd's surfacing operations achieved production rates of:
Approx. 1,000 tonnes of road base per shift
Approx. 650 tonnes of binder course per shift
Approx. 500 tonnes of wearing course per shift
Achieving these rates required effective coordination between material deliveries, our paving team and the wider construction programme. This work formed part of the combined effort needed to keep the project progressing efficiently.
A successful project delivered through collaboration
Completing a development of this scale within 12 weeks was a significant undertaking, requiring strong project coordination and the effective integration of multiple workstreams.
Through our client's overall management and delivery of the project, supported by Derek Lewis Ltd's high-volume surfacing operations and precision paving techniques, the new Amazon parking facility was completed within the required timeframe.
The project demonstrates the value of experienced contractors working together, with our client leading the wider development and Derek Lewis Ltd delivering a substantial and technically demanding element of the works.
